Customer Review: Well-designed coffee maker

My wife and I are very pleased with this coffee maker (Krups 453-71). It makes MUCH better coffee than our old Mr. Coffee.It has a gold filter, auto-off (1-5 hours), 3 brew-strength settings (1-3 cups, 4-12 "medium", 4-12 "strong"), 6 carafe plate heat levels, an optional carafe pre-warm function (warms the carafe for 5 minutes before brewing), and can use a charcoal water filter (one is supplied). It is also programmable to start brewing at a specified time.
We've only used the 4-12 "strong" setting, but it makes DELICIOUS coffee. It pulses the water released into the grinds (I'd say it's about a 15-second cycle) so that each bit of water has time to brew before draining into the carafe. We only get a small amount of fine grounds slipping through the filter (I grind for about 8 seconds).
The overall design of the unit is great -- no gotchas. Water pours in easily, carafe doesn't dribble. We don't use the supplied charcoal filter because we're already using filtered water. The carafe lid is has this grid over the pouring spout that is supposed to retain droplets of coffee to sort of seal the lid and prevent evaporation. It doesn't really work, but who cares. It was a clever idea that was worth a shot.
Overall we love this unit and have no complaints!

Perhaps the aroma will rouse you from your slumbers instead of a jarring alarm clock. Now wouldn't that be a kinder, gentler way to start the day? You'll also appreciate the cleaner brighter taste that filtered water gives your coffee, thanks to the NaturActiv charcoal filter system that is integral to this machine.By offering three brewing-cycle options, this coffeemaker makes it possible to brew up to three 5-ounce cups of full-flavored coffee, or up to 12 cups of medium-strength or strong coffee. Choosing one of the options is easy thanks to an electronic control panel with a LCD display. Other buttons on the panel permit the 60-ounce carafe to be prewarmed, the warming plate to be set at six different temperatures or shut off automatically, and the 24-hour clock/timer to be set for brewing wake-up coffee. For extracting optimum coffee flavor, the coffeemaker is equipped with Krups' Deep-Brew system, which pulses hot water through the grounds at precisely timed intervals. For convenience (no messy paper filters), the machine has a permanent gold tone filter. For removing chlorine from tap water, there's a vegetable-based filter. (Replacement filters can be ordered separately.)
Other features include a 20-second pause in the brewing cycle when the glass carafe is removed for a midbrew pour, a carafe lid that seals in flavor and aroma, an electronic warning when the coffeemaker needs decalcifying (though calcification is minimized because residual water is removed when brewing is complete), an easy-to-read magnified water-level window, and cord storage.
