Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 54-Ounce Electric KettlesCustomer Review: Three Years of Use, Still Works Great Summary: 5 Stars
I was motivated to write this review when I was looking to buy a second of these as a gift and I came across the "most helpful negative review." The main thrust of that review is that this kettle has design defects that will make it break down over time.
I bought this kettle three years ago. I use it everyday, usually more than once. It still works just like it originally did: great.
Also, I see there are objections that the container gets hot. I've never noticed that the carafe portion gets very hot, BECAUSE I DON'T GRAB IT BY THE SIDES, I USE THE HANDLE! Maybe if you have children and leave it plugged in on the floor this would be a concern!
I like the entire design. The reviewer to whom I referred considers the transparent water indicator a flaw, because it can leak. I like to see how much water I've put in, and I've seen no leaks or other problems.
Some reviewers haven't liked the lid. I like it. I've used my parents' Cuisinart kettle that has a flip-up lid, and occasionally the lid swivels up while I'm pouring the hot water and I get scalded.
I've used probably 10 or 15 different models of electric kettles (in vacation apartments, hotel rooms, friends' homes, etc, as well as the Regal I owned before this Krups), and I like this one the best. It has nice balance, I don't get scalded using it, it heats quickly and shuts off promptly (before steaming up the kitchen as some others do), it feels solid, it doesn't have aluminum touching the water (I think it doesn't anyway), and it's reliable.
The only people for whom I would not recommend this unit are those who have major memory problems. The reason for this is that it will not turn off if you forget to put the lid on. (At least I think that's the case; I've never had the problem; the description does not mention the sort of failsafe that would be required to turn it off if the lid were not on.) So, when I bought a kettle for my mother-in-law, who had something verging on Alzheimer's, I found a different unit that included an additional sensor that turned the unit off if the lid were not on and the unit boiled away all the water. (I can't remember which unit that was, but seek and you shall find.)
